Learning from kids

I must say, dealing with kids in the Child Psychiatry Department is indeed an 'enlightening' experience.

I soon realized how different the concept of an 'ideal' treatment could be when it comes to these kids.

It is not about what the kids cannot do, or food or activity that they need to stay away from, or in essence; the inability that they would suffer.

But, really, it's all about:
  • Realizing potential
  • Exploring new possibility
  • Expanding the horizon
Say, a kid come with autism or Attention Deficit and Hyperactive Disorder. Surely the first thing that the parents or the guardian would do is complaining what the children cannot do, like cannot speak properly, poor academic performance, irritability, poor attention, 'weird' behaviour etc.

Your job as a treating doctor is far from satisfactory if you just merely make a diagnosis and list out the possible treatment/therapy. You need to get the parents to understand that this problem does not mean the children cannot do anything. They just can't perform through the 'conventional' way. We need to find a new, collateral way for them to perform.

And actually, they found that these autistic kids are somewhat 'brighter' in certain aspect, like mathematics and logic. Why don't we help these kids to spread their 'folded' wings and let them soar above the sky?

Yes, we can!

I don't really watch Barney by the way, he looks creepy =)

Oh, please. Admit it Fits. Every night you dress in your Barney suit and start singing 'Teng, teng, teng' in front of the mirror. Barney's your idol, Fitri. Don't deny it. We all see right through you.

On a more serious note though, it's heart warming that you show compassion for your little patients. Go Fitri!
